Goals, Tasks, Principles of Activity

Agency of Cultural Resilience (ACURE) — was founded in 2022 as a response to Russia's military aggression against Ukraine and as the legal entity of the Kyiv office of the Heritage Emergency Response Initiative (HERI).

The Agency's mission is to protect cultural heritage during crises, promote the development of an emergency management system, support a sustainable and resilient arts and culture sector in Ukraine, and invest in the preservation of cultural heritage worldwide.

Among the priority directions of the Agency's activities are documenting damage and assessing risks to cultural heritage during crises, providing first aid to culture, professional development in cultural emergency management, conducting scientific research and organizing exhibition projects, creating professional networks, and promoting knowledge, people, and events in art and cultural heritage.

The Agency of Cultural Resilience closely collaborates with international organizations, including ICCROM, CER, the Smithsonian Institution, ALIPH, the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation, as well as the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine and national non-governmental institutions.

An important result of documenting losses and damages during expeditions is the 3D model of the object. Detailed fixation (laser scanning or photogrammetry) allows not only to record all the main characteristics and condition of the monument at the time of scanning, conduct a professional analysis of its state, and plan priority rescue operations, but also to later recreate the monument using augmented or virtual reality technology. In April-June, using photogrammetry and laser scanning, 3D models of damaged objects were created in the towns of Borodyanka and Irpin in the Kyiv region, the village of Vyazivka in the Zhytomyr region, the city of Kharkiv, and in the Chernihiv region.

Museification of War

The expeditions began with documenting a kitchen cabinet in Borodyanka that survived a bomb strike. Using drones, they recorded artifacts for future museum exhibitions. Since then, they have been preserving war-related artifacts, eyewitness testimonies, and documentary materials, as well as organizing exhibitions to raise awareness about the destruction of Ukrainian heritage.

Preserving cultural heritage in times of crisis

During times of conflict and disaster, preserving cultural heritage becomes even more critical. Our mission is to document, rescue, and protect valuable cultural artifacts and objects threatened by destruction. Using innovative technologies such as drones and 3D modeling, we meticulously capture every detail to ensure the accurate restoration of these treasures. By assessing risks, collecting eyewitness testimonies, and organizing educational exhibitions, we raise awareness about the urgent need to safeguard our shared history and cultural heritage for future generations.
